      L. peruensis is probably the largest member of this varied group of plants. The genus is part of the family Onagraceae, which includes Oenothera, or the Evening Primrose. The similarity is easy to see. Lanceolate leaves, 4-petaled flowers, long ovaries filled with thousands of dust-like seeds. Ludwigia includes 75 species which occur all over the world, but mainly in warmer areas of the Americas. L. peruensis is a woody shrub that in the wild eventually form large colonies along the banks of rivers and bogs. Branches will root whenever they touch the water and begin to grow as separate plants. In the domestic pond, however, it is easy to keep it in check and to have a handsome shrub that responds well to pruning and produces dozens of bright yellow flowers through summer.
