This is a variegated form of the smaller of the two members of this genus, the other being the familiar Sweetflag, A. calamus. It is a useful plant on the margins of streams and ponds, especially when there are stones piled against the side of the pond where it is impossible to hold soil. There are other forms of A. gramineus, each with its own name assigned according to the color of the leaves. This one is "Variegatus", and exhibits white variegations. The others are "Ogon", which has creamy white variegations, and "Pusillus", which is dark green with no variegations. Acorus grow on creeping rhizomes that branch freely, eventually forming dense colonies. They are native flooded areas and stremsides throughout the northern hemisphere, especially E. Asia. They may be cultivated in average soil or, when in standing water, they may be planted bare root among stones. They will perform equally well in full sun or partial shade as long as they get plenty of water. Spikes of insignificant flowers are produced in summer. Propagation is by rootstock division. Both leaves and roots of A. calamus are sweetly fragrant when disturbed, hence the name, "Sweetflag".
