Alisma is the type genus in a family that is of great econmic importance to the aquatic plant industry, the Alimataceae, or the Water Plantains. This important group includes Sagittaria and Echinodorus, two of the most important genera in the hobby. Alisma has 6 species, native to Europe, North Africa, Asia, and the Americas. All are characterized by their sprays of small, three-petaled, white, pink, or lavender flowers. Alismas are winter-dormant, recovering each spring from a perennial rootstock.
