This has been one of the happier additions to our collection. Since we got this plant, our springs are brighter, and our summers are better accented. Mimulus is one of the first plants to begin to grow in the spring, progressing rapidly to form either floating colonies over open water or on the pond edge, first creeping over the ground but eventually turning upward to bloom, which begins in February or March in milder zones. Flowers are produced in clusters of up to 20 blossoms, each looking out of the cluster with bright yellow faces, sometimes accented with red spots. After the first bloom in spring more follow at intervals through the summer. Native to Pacific coast, Alaska to Mexico. Found in many forms over that range, with most of the differences having to do with flower coloration. Our strain was collected in the desert east of San Diego in a wash. The plants have only a short time to do what they have to do before the water dries up, so they bloom very early in their growth. When they are put into permanent water, they show their appreciation by performing almost constantly. We use them in streams, pond margins, waterfall weirs, and on large fountains. Cut them back after they bloom. Reseeds freely. Zones 6-9.
