Cyperus alternifolius is one of those plants that has been used in gardens for generations. It was first used in gardens long ago because of its ease of cultivation and its somewhat exotic appearance. It will tolerate an amazing range of conditions. We have seen poor put-upon specimens growing in cracked, sun-baked dirt with tufts of dog hair and bits of trash alongside, to specimens that were thriving lushly in cool pond water with their heads held high and surrounded by their loving offspring. It is a good plant to use for that instant tropical look for it will tolerate shade and looks good near a pond and/or in it. It is necessary to trim dying stems out as they become unsightly. Propagation is by seed, rootstock division, or as adventitious daughter plants that emerge from the floral cluster in conditions of high humidity or when the top of the stem touches water.
