We always like to use this plant around the base of some emergent bog plant such as Hibiscus or Iris varieties. It can grow quite thickly over time so it should be thinned out from time to time. In the early spring or late winter, we cut it back to make room for new growth. The older stems tend to become less attractive than they were in their youths, so it is best to trim them out. Opening them up allows more air to circulate around the plants and so reduces the possibility that there will be pests in them. In the full sun, the stems sometimes turn red. Flowering is typical of Myriophyllum spp., insignificant flowers arranged in whorls around the emergent stem. When the plant goes into the bloom mode, the leaves becomes smaller, lighter green and tend to recurve slightly. Propagation is most readily done by stem cuttings.
