This is one of those plants that did well for me in spite of myself. We collected it on a roadside in the coast ranges of southern California. We brought it home and put it into a contianer with its own soil and mollycoddled it along. It seemed to fail no matter what I did but I left the pot in the tank. Suddenly, a couple of months after the last one had died off and I had pretty nearly forgotten about it, the potting sprang to life and we have had the plant ever since. It does particularly well in well watered but not necessarily flooded conditions. It will tolerate periods of inundation, but prefers to be out of the water for the most part. Right now it grows as a charming, 6" tall ground cover adjacent to one of our ponds. Will grow in sun or shade and will tolerate clay soils. Somewhat drought tolerant because of tubers along its rhizome. Native to the Pacific coast from southern California north to British Columbia.
