This is a charming plant that forms colonies in bog planters or pottings. In the spring when they emerge from their winter dormancy, they first produce small pointed leaves. These give way to larger, chordate leaves that are alternately opposed on the thick, vertical stem. When the plants are about a foot tall, they produce their fragrant floral spikes. These emerge from a leaf axil a few leaves below the end of the stem. Flowers last for a few weeks, with the inflorescence ending up curved back on itself slightly, hence the name, Lizard's Tail.
