This is one of the more common plants found in the marshes and along the streams of the upper midwest and down into Florida. Its seeds are a staple among waterfowl and other aquatic animals. In the late summer seeds can be found en masse at the edges of ponds. Seeds germinate in the spring and after having gone through a series of leaf forms, soon produce the characteristic elongated chordate leaves that give the plant its common name, "Arrow arum". Flowers are insignificant and are concealed in a spathe which splits open at one side, revealing a narrow spike of small, green, sessile flowers. The upper half, which is staminate, or pollen-producing, decays after a time, leaving the bottom half to produce seeds, which grow in a tight cluster around the central spike. Seeds are green and stay that way for the most part, althoug some of them turn yellow. This is a good plant to use in shady locations, or with other plants along th eedge of a pond in full sun. It is winter dormant, but recovers early in the spring. Zones 4-10.
