This is probably the smallest of the Nymphoides, but it is certainly not the least of them as far as its ability to grow and to please the owner enormously. If planted in a container with good soil, it will quickly reach the surface and begin to spread out. It does this by producing plantlets and flowers from near the top of each stem, just beneath the leaf. Each new plant develops roots and leaves and in their turn, its own offspring, each of which continues the process until something happens to break it all up. In the full sun they produce a fine display with their contrasting red and green foliage, mixed with the numerous small white flowers. Each flower is about 1/2" in diameter. Its petals are fused together along their marigns, forming a crested appearance, hence the name 'cristata'. Will tolerate considerable cold. Prefers full sun to shade. Best if grown in water that is no more than 12" ZONE 8 deep.
