This is the plant that was used in ancient Egypt as paper. It can be seen growing in the Nile River today in huge floating masses along the river banks. For our purposes, though, it is an outstanding plant for any but the smallest settings, lending a graceful and an unusual leaf form to the garden. As is the case with all members of this genus, Papyrus can be grown in or out of water, although the lushest plants have their feet in the water. Requires pruning to keep the dying leaves out and the freshest leaves showing.
