Caltha palustris is one of the loveliest of the low growing bog plants. As early as possible in the spring brilliant green leaves emerge form a perrenial rootstock. The emergence of the new leaves is accompanied by the emergence of inflorescences which branch to produce several flowers. Goes dormant in the summer. Historically, C. palustris has been eaten by some cultures, with the leaves being used as a potherb and the pickled flowers as substitutes for capers. Usually this plant is one of the harbingers of spring, although the first ones that I ever saw in the wild were in southern Michigan, in bloom, in November! A heat wave has prevailed for some time and the Calthas thought that it was spring and were growing furiously. Normal geographical range includes most of Canada, south to North Carolina and Tennessee. Propagation is by rootstock division or by seeds.
