Not all Cannas will tolerate long periods of inundation, but happily for those of us in the hobby, there are several that will. Even if a variety does not do well directly in the water, Cannas always look good when planted immediately adjacent to, or in the vicinity of, a pond. There are hybrids ranging from simple to gaudy, short, medium height, or tall ones, and they come in several colors, ranging from creamy white to yellow, pale pink to dark, shocking red, and several shades of orange, as well as bi-colored flowers. Cultivation is child's play. Merely give them some average to rich soil, plenty of water, and remove old stalks as they finish. It is advisable to wreak havoc on them every year in the late winter or early spring, dividing, thinning, and rejuvenating soil. Tubers can be pulled in cold winter areas and will store very well in sawdust or peat moss in a root cellar. Will tolerate light frost with no special care. Zones 8-11.
