    Reeds and rushes have been used by mankind for thousands of years. Many uses include clothing, rooftops, basketry, floormats, and shoes. They have upright, green, grass-like leaves and can be potted or naturalized in earth bottom ponds, creating a dense, lush screen or backdrop.

A California native. It has a spreading rhizome that quickly forms colonies on the edge of bogs and streams. Erect stems grow to as much as 12 inches in height, and have whorls of leaves at intervals along their lengths. The whorls become shorter near the tip of the stem, creating a more or less conical shape. Fertile stems are erect, not branched and fade quickly. Pollen is blue-gray. Serves well as a ground cover in clay soils.
