    Reeds and rushes have been used by mankind for thousands of years. Many uses include clothing, rooftops, basketry, floormats, and shoes. They have upright, green, grass-like leaves and can be potted or naturalized in earth bottom ponds, creating a dense, lush screen or backdrop.

The differneces lie in the shine of the leaves, which is lacking in S. cernuus, and in the fact that at the end of the stem, under the flowers, the last one or two leaves turn bright white, which provides an interesting contrast to the glossy green leaves below and draws attention to the flowers.
