L. palustris is an excellent choice for ponds and for cooler aquaria. The leaves are ovate, pointed on the end and sit on a short petiole. The leaf margins are frequently undulate. Leaves grow to 2" long and 3/4" wide. Stems branch freely, especially if they are trimmed. When grown in well lit situations, leaves turn to shades of red. In ponds, the plants will grow in several inches of water or out of the pond, into the surrounding landscape, growing short, dark green leaves on prostrate stems. In any situation, this plant is easy to grow. Can also be anchored in shallow water areas using small stones or gravel.

IAP Water Hyssop 'Smooth' - Bacopa monnieri1

A beautiful plant which produces bright green, ovate leaves one inch long and a half an inch wide. It will form thickets by branching and running through the substrate. If allowed to grow out of the aquarium it will reward the aquarist with bright blue flowers and foliage that is scented like peaches, a scent it will retain when the foliage has dried. It grows well in strong light with moderate feeding and pruning. Can be planted in with your waterlilies, lotus or bog plants. Can also be anchored in shallow water areas using small stones or gravel or grown in shallow trays.

Also known as Indian fern, water fern, Oriental waterfern, and water hornfern. Water Sprite, Ceratopteris thalictroides, is one of the most beautiful plants in the aquarium or pond. It is also one of the easiest to grow. A planted specimen will reach the tank's surface and produce numerous offspring right on the leaves. The offspring can be planted immediately to start the process over. Floating colonies of small plants provide excellent coverage for baby fish. Leaves are fern-like, heavily incised on the margins, bright green, and can reach lengths of a foot, or more. Can be accomodated to any size aquarium, but larger tanks can hold large, beautiful, lush specimens.

Mentha aquatica is a vigorous marginal plant that will quickly establish itself in shallow water or in moist ground. *Shipping Restrictions*

Water Hawthorn is an excellent winter replacement for water lilies. Native of South Africa. ZONE 8-11

The brilliant yellow, star shaped flowers have 5 narrow, fringed petals, each about an inch and a half long and a quarter of an inch wide. ZONE 8

Crinum produces one of the most beautiful inflorescences in the water gardening world. Above its strap-like leaves, on a thick stem, are 3 -7 large, strongly fragrant, white flowers, each of which has five narrow petals. Flowers are produced in spring and fall. Plants will grow to 18 inches tall and produces runners which will eventually form a colony in a pot or large bog setting. Seeds are also produced. (Also known as Southern Bog Lily, or Seven Sisters.)

Very much like the standard Calla except that the normally pure white flower is suffused with green. Flowers are large and numerous. Grows to 2 feet tall, in water or out.

This is one of the nicest looking Callas in that its dark green leaves are covered with bright white spots, which brighten any setting. Its flowers are the standard bright white Calla flower, which matches well with the leaves. Grows to no more than 18" tall, prefers partial shade.

A water tolerant Canna with red flowers and dark purplish red leaves that are strikingly variegated with green and cream stripes. The strikingly variegated leaves are offset by the bright orange-red 4 to 5 inch flowers. Does well in up to 6 inches of water, but will grow well on land. Zones 8-11, although we have seen Canna in use in road mediums in a town in southern Michigan!

Lobelia cardinalis is certainly among the most striking of all of the plants that can be grown in a bog. From a rosette of bright green or red leaves arises a stalk of brilliant red flowers that grows to four feet or more. Blooming continues from late May through September. Propagation is by seed or rootstock division. Winter hardy.

Houtuynia chordata variegata is similar in virtually all respects to its non-variegated cousin, with the only exceptions being in the colors of the leaves and in the relative winter hardiness of the two varieties. The leaves of this variety exhibit a range of colors from creamy white, through various shades of yellow and red on a field of green. This is the less winter hardy of the two and is also somewhat less vigorous and competitive than the standard variety. It is worth the little extra work to have this plants beautiful colors in your watergarden.

Very similar to its American cousin, S. cernuus. The differneces lie in the shine of the leaves, which is lacking in S. cernuus, and in the fact that at the end of the stem, under the flowers, the last one or two leaves turn bright white, which provides an interesting contrast to the glossy green leaves below and draws attention to the flowers.

This is the common Cattail that virtually everyone is familiar with. The leaves grow up to 10 feet tall and 3/4 of an inch wide. It flowers in late spring/early summer and produces 'cattails' in late summer and fall. Good in large ponds as a vertical accent in a background. Stems are prostrate to semi-erect, branching, and will grow to 6 feet long or more. The leaves are bright green, elliptic or oblong, and sometimes grow to 5 inches in length. The yellow and daisy-like flowers are up to 2.5" in diamter and are produced in masses at the ends of the stems. Stout, erect bog plant that often grows up to 2 feet tall and has large, bright green, chordate leaves. Leaves are frequently larger than a man's hand and are held on stems which can grow up to 2 feet long. The 1 inch wide white flowers are held in clusters of up to a dozen or more along a long, branched stem at 4 to 5 inch intervals. Adventitious daughter plants are produced from the same area as the flowers and will root freely when they come into contact with moist soil or water. This is a useful plant along the edge of a pond or in a bog. The flowers are seen from spring through summer.

Identical to its green counterpart, with the esception that this form is yellow-green. The two look very nice together. They will grow on dry ground or in floating mats over several feet of water. IBP Dwarf Cyperus - Cyperus alternifolius var. Gracilis1

A nice compact version of the standard Egyptian Papyrus. Large fluffy "mops" of green on short triangular stems. Very cute in small ponds, or a good height scale planted in areas with taller plants. Grows to about 3' in height. Prefers full sun to part shade. USDA ZONES 9-11

Leaves very similar to H. ranunculoides, except that this one is much smaller, only growing to an inch or so wide and a few inches tall. As with all species of Hydrocotyl, small clusters of white flowers are produced off and on through the summer. This one is good on pond and stream margins, in hanging baskets, and in table to containers.

Dwarf version of Hydrocotyle vulgaris, grows to about 1/3 the size. Great for use as a low-growing ground cover, or in table-top bowl gardens. Will tolerate a wide range of conditions.

Also known as Haspan Sedge or Sharp-edged Sedge. Dwarf Papyrus is a charming little plant that does well in or out of water around the pond edge. Tufts of very thin, green leaves are held alofton narrow green stems which arise form a rhizome. This is a more compact, darker hued version of the familiar floating plant, Parrot's Feather, Myriophyllum brasiliense. The stems are stiffer than in M. brasiliense, and they never get quite as long. This one makes a lovely display around the base of a larger bog plant or pond fixture, in a stream setting, or along the edge of a pond. Stands less than a foot above the water when not crowded, and adds a nice texture to any setting. plants. Boldly variegated foliage. Very distinctive. Useful at the pond's edge. Grows well with its roots in open water, so it is possible to have it growing amid stones at a pond's edge. Also does well in soil out of the water. Brightens the areas of the pond where there is muted light. Massed plantings have the greatest effect. Safe to grow in earth bottom ponds. Zones 4-11.

Narrow, hollow, round stems arise from the familiar fleshy tuber of oriental food fame. Culms grow to 2 feet tall in the right spot. One plant will produce several bulbs in the fall. Winter dormant.

Sagittaria montevidensis ~~ One of the more intriguing members of the genus. Large, stiff, sagitate leaves are produced at the end of thick stems. Plants can grow up to 3 feet tall, but are usually 1.5 feet tall. The flowers are the best part. They are like large versions of the typical Sagittaria flower with a large dark red spot at the bottom of each petal. Plants form clusters which may be divided during the growing season. Unless protected form winter cold and complete dormancy, this is an annual sp. and must reseed to come back. Not to worry, though, each plant will produce thousands of seeds during the summer, many of which will germinate in shallow water. Emersed leaves are approx. 1.5 by 3.5 inches and are broadly lanceolate. Stems are up to 1 foot long. The flowers are 1/2 inch in diameter and are carried above the leaves. As they fill with seeds, they sometimes bend over under their own weight. A very suitable plant for small water gardens and for the margins of larger ones. A bog plant, often growing to 1 meter in length. The stems are erect and round. The leaves are heart-shaped with an elongated point. The upper side of the leaf is dark green and dotted. A fast-growing species of Moneywort with lobed and irregularly indented leaf margins. Makes an attractive display in shaded areas or in moderately sunny ponds. Mixes well with Hyacinth in the summer. Great in places where nothing else will grow. Frequently requires heavy pruning at the end of each season.

Also known as Fiber Optic Grass. A very attractive grasslike, rush relative growing to 8 inches tall with bright green evergreen foliage. Plant in part shade to full sun along the coast, directly in water at a depth of 2 in. or at the water's edge. Useful singularly, in mass or as a ground cover. In the summer, attractive dark brown small flowers appear at the end of each stem and contrast well with the foliage. Cut back yearly for fresh new growth. L. peploides is like a large version of L. repens. The leaves grow to 4"-6" long and 1" wide. Stems creep out over open water or the ground, producing roots, leaves, and bright yellow, 1" diameter flowers at intervals along their lengths. An outstanding adunct to biological filters because of its capacity to use a lot of nutrients. Useful along the margins of large ponds, in streams, or in the tops of large biological filters.

A small shrub or tree-like plant. Lanceolate leaves up to 4 inches long grow on woody stems. The flowers are borne on new growth and are brilliant yellow. They are 1.5 inches in diameter and are quite numerous. Plant in moist ground or in water up to 18 inches deep. In the mountains of southern California it suffers light to moderate frost quite well. This plant responds well to pruning. We have even been tempted to try to espallier one. Well cared for they become quite handsome with age.

Fast growing plant with coarsely textured leaves. Spreads by means of underground stems, which do seem to have a particular talent for getting into everything. Best when used in a contained area, or if you have a large area where it can naturalize. This is a reliable bloomer and is winter hardy in most areas.

Glossy, dark green leaves grow to a height of 8 inches from a perennial rootstock. Small (1/2 inch), brilliant yellow flowers are held above the foliage in clusters forming a beautiful display of bright contrasting colors. This plant forms colonies and will grow in or out of the water, making it an ideal candidate for pond margins and stream beds. Also called Buckbean or Bog-bean. Common in shallow pools and acid bogs. Its thick, spongy, creeping rootstock quickly colonize the edges of ponds. It is distributed throughout North America, Northern Asia, Europe, and northwestern India. With feathery white star-shaped flowers gathered into a cluster at the top of the flower stems, this is one of the prettiest wild flowers.

Caltha palustris. The flowers are yellow, with 5 petals. The heart shaped leaves are bright green and slightly toothed on the edges. Th eplant forms a clump from which several plants grow after a couple of years. It blooms in spring and fall.

Round leaves are held on narrow stems that attach in the center of the leaf. Leaves grow to nearly 2" in diameter, and the stems will grow to a foot long when crowded, but are usually shorter than that. Wilform colonies on pond margins or afloat over open water. Mixes in well with other plants, tolerates shade. Moderately invasive.

This is the smallest of the Typhas, or Cattails. Grows to about 18" tall with narrow leaves and cute little "cattails". As the name would have you believe, this plant is similar to the rest of the Marselias except for the distinction of being the smallest. The leaves are no more than 1 inch in diameter on a good day, and the plants only grow to a few inches tall. It can be anchored with gravel or small stones in shallow water areas.(1-2" of water). *BACKORDERED* A relative of Water Hyacinth, this plant stays small, creeping out over the water or across mud. Glossy, bright green leaves, each with a small white spot where the leaf meets the stem. The leaves are broadly chordate, almost round, with a deep sinus. They are held on short stems which grow from a creeping rhizome. Flowers occur in clusters of 5 to 10, are white to lavender, and are rather small. A beautiful little plant which will do well in shallow bogs or in running streams.

Very similar to the Common Cattail, T. latifolia, except that the leaves are about 2/3 as wide, and do not get quite as tall. This difference gives it a lighter, less dense appearance.

Erect to drooping leaves form dense, bright green clumps. Flowers are inconspicuous by themselves but collectively form a tuft at the end of each fertile culm. Good for use in moist to shallowly flooded areas. Makes a fine accent plant in a small garden or in mass plantings as a groundcover.

Obedient Plant is happy in either sunny or lightly shaded spots, but it does best with some shade on drier sites, and full sun where it is wetter. Narrow green leaves with tall showy flower spikes of pale lavender-pink flowers. Native to eastern North America. USDA ZONES 3-9

An herbaceous creeping or submerged plant. The leaves grow in groups of 4 to 6 in whorls around the stem. Submersed foliage is soft, finely divided and, in full sun, red. Emersed leaves are stiff, about 1 inch long, gray-green, and create a lovely effect when the stand is well established. An excellent filtration plant. Good in plantings around the edge of a pond. Same form as the other Marselias. The leaves grow to 1.5 inches in diameter and have an essentially smooth edge. The common name is derived from the frequently bright red starburst pattern in the center of the frond. This pattern tends to fade in shady conditions but is nonetheless attractive. ZONE 7

Glossy green leaves Grows to 2'. Leaves are glossy green, up to 6" long, with stout stems. The green spathe is up to 8 inches long, convolute and wavy along the margins, and is usually hidden among the leaves. IBP Pickerel Rush - Blue - Pontederia chordata1

A variety of Pickerel that grows less tall than the more familiar blue Pickerel. Instead of the taller 4' blue, this variety grows to only 2 to 3 feet tall. The leaves and stems are dark green and have a more distinctly chordate leaf. A bushy bog plant with long green stems which can stand as much as 4 feet above the water's surface. The bright green leaves are up to 5 inches long and 1/2 of an inch wide. The inflorescences are up to 5 inches long and are covered with small, bright pink flowers. It can be anchored with gravel or small stones in shallow water areas.(1-2" of water)

This is a tall, erect, willowy leaved sp of Ludwigia. It grows to 6 feet tall with leaves up to 6 inches long, and 1/2 inch wide. Stems become woody and plant will bloom only on new wood. Like its counterpart, L. peruensis, this sp. responds well to pruning and can be a beautiful thing with proper care. Flowers are bright yellow and are cupped, unlike L. peruensis flowers, which are flat. It does well in moist soil or in standing water up to 12 inches deep.

A charming little streamside plant that produces finely divided leaves at the ends of 2"-6" stems. Yellow flowers are produced spring through summer. Spreads by runners, and is excellent for stony stream and pond margins.

Commonly referred to as "Ribbon Grass", this hardy little grass produces green and white striped leaves in mounded tufts that can grow to 18" tall. Narrow spikes of flowers are produced above the leaves in the summer. Will grow in or out of water in full sun or partial shade. It can be anchored with gravel or small stones in shallow water areas.(1-2" of water) Zones 4-10.

A tall bog plant with slightly fuzzy leaves. It stands 2 to 4 feet tall. It has a large "head" of small vase shaped, pink flowers, sometimes leaning toward lavender. The foliage is aromatic, some might say ill-scented. Plant it where it will remain undisturbed. Prune old flowers as they finish to avoid getting too many seedlings. Forms a nice, long lasting display of pink flowers through most of the summer.

One of the more charming bog plants for any size water garden. Small round leaves are held on a prostrate or upright stem, which is topped with a set of three spikes or small, fragrant, pink flowers. This is a plant that will also grow completely under water, producing entirely differnet leaves, making it an interesting oxygenator or aquarium plant. Blooms off and on from late winter through summer. Excellent when mixed in with other low growing bog or marginal plants such as Forget-me-not, Mentha, or Bacopa.In the pond it can be planted directly into "pockets" of gravel. (1-2" of water). Could also be planted in shallow trays or a 10" pan to create a mass effect.

Lance shaped leaved 4 to 6 inches long are held on stems 2 to 6 feet tall. Large, white flowers are held on stems 5 to 6 feet high. The plants form clumps which can become quite large. Dividing these clumps every couple of years is the most reliable way to propogate them.

Sagittaria lancifolia "Red Stem" ~~ Same as S. lancifolia but with a distinctly red coloration at the base of, and going up about one third the length of, the leaf stem.

Sagittaria sp. ~~ Very similar to S. lancifolia except that the leaves are narrower and are more sharply bent along the mid-rib. The leaf stems are green overall but they have attractive red variegations running in parrallel, horizontal rows parallel to the ground. The flowers are smaller than S. lancifolia, but are more numerous.

Most useful as a submersed grass in aquariums and as an oxygenator in ponds. Ribbon shaped leaves grow up to 12 inches long and 3/8 of an inch wide. Plant reproduces by runners and can form dense colonies which become dense enough to stabilize soil in ponds. In shallow water small, dark green, ovate leaves with small brown speckles are produces. Small, white flowers float on the water's surface or are held slightly above it.

Also called Viginia Salt Marsh Mallow, or Sweat Weed. Grows to 1.5-4' tall. 1.5-2.5" pink flowers resemble a hibiscus. Flowers early summer into the fall. This seashore mallow is a salt-tolerant plant, often growing in places other plants can't.

Siberian Pink Cups ZONE 2 - Grows to 6" tall in sunny or partially shaded areas along the margins of ponds or streams. Will form dense colonies be means of runners, which will grow out of the pond or along the water line. From among the leaves of the adult plants, and with the young plants on the runners, three-petaled, pink flowers, each with a yellow spot in the center, are held above the foliage on thin stems. They are about 1/2" in diameter. They fade through the day to white. Leaves are thinly lanceolate, and are acutely pointed at the end.

This is a variegated variety of Society Garlic. Leaves are vertically striped with white variegations on a dark green field. A native of the west Indies. Numerous long (up to 3 feet) leaves grow from a globose bulb. Large, fragrant, white flowers are borne in clusters of 6 to 12 on 2 to 3 foot stems. Each flower has narrow, curved petals and a central toothed cup about an inch deep. Propagation is by runners or seeds. Flowers in March & April. ZONE 8 Bulbs winter over indoors. ie: basement ect.

Narrow, dark green leaves grow from a perennial rootstock to form a clump 1 to 2 feet tall. Clusters of small, brown flowers are produced at the tops of certain stems.

Also known as Star Rush or White-topped Sedge. Erect stems grow 12 to 15-1/2 inches tall. One of the distinguishing characteristics of the species are the white bracts that radiate from the ends of the stems. Clusters of brownish flowers are in the center of the whorl of bracts. The plants need to be pruned back when the stems get rangy and will recover quickly after having been severely pruned back. Provides a nice accent among darker foliage. Not a true Iris, but the leaves are very similar to those of Iris plants. They are bright green and are frequently heavily ribbed. Flowers are insignificant. When the foliage is disturbed, a very pleasant fragrance is released into the air, giving the entire area a nice smell. Prefers shade to full sun.

A taro with dark purple stems and green leaves with black variegations. Makes a creamy yellow flower. Grows up to 6 feet, but is generally somewhat smaller. Colocasia 'Tea Cup' is an exciting new colocasia that has black stems and black-tinted dark green leaves that form an upright cup which will hold water. A Taro with green leaves and dark violet colored stems. Leaves become quite large. A striking accent in brightly lit areas and in shady corners as well. Flowers are creamy yellow. Thalia dealbata. The "original" Water Canna. Delicate panicles of bell shaped, dark amythest flowers are held 6 to 8 feet above the ground. Leaves are broad, and erect. Flower stem emerges from center of leaves. Foliage gives a good tropical planting effect. Leaves stand 4 to 6 feet tall. Zones 7-11.

A very useful groundcover plant in moist areas around ponds or over open water. Creeping stems grow from perrenial rootstocks and will reach three feet or more in length over the course of the summer season, rooting where the nodes touch moist ground or open water. Can be anchored in shallow water with small stones or gravel. Leaves are small, oppositely opposed, and dark green. Tolerates frost and heat. Annual pruning keeps it in check.

The old familiar "Umbrella Plant". Long, narrow leaves are arranged in a whorl at the end of a long (up to 6 foot) stem. The plant forms dense clumps and is good as a backdrop or as an accent plant. The small, yellow green flowers are in clusters at the center of the leaf bases.

An attractive rigidly upright growing 18-24 inch tall rush from New Zealand. The 1/8 inch wide needle-like leaves are deep green and striped along one edge with yellow. Will grow to up to 3 feet tall. Hardy to about 0-10 degrees F.

As with its green counterpart, this plant is reminicent of an Iris, but the similarity ends with the leaves, which are decidedly strap-like with gright cream or yellow colored variegations running the length of the leaf. The flowers are almost insignificant, but can be seen among the leaves in th espring. The foliage is very fragrant when broken or rubbed, which is a good deal of it, and its green relative's charm. Will grow in exposed mud or in water up to about a foot deep. Does well in semi-shady conditions. Grows to 2 feet tall. Zones 4 - 11

This is a relative of the carrot plant, and as such, it has finely divided, compound leaves. In this case, however, the leaves are painted in various hues of green, cream, and pink. Plants grow to about 12" tall, with the floral stalks rising slightly above that. Good in full sun or shade, useful in streams, on pond margins, or bogs.

Identical to the familiar Water Poppy except that this one is about 50 percent larger. The leaves are frequently variegated with reddish blotches. Flowers in July,August. Unlike its smaller counterpart, this plant will produce viable seed, which germinate readily on the bottom of the pond. Excellent in water up to 18 inches deep, full sun, spreads by runners. As with its smaller counterpart, this species is not tolerant of hard frost. ZONE 8

Long, very thin, grasslike culms (the aboveground stems of grasses or grasslike plants) form soft mounds along the edges of streams and ponds. Stems are viviparous, producing adventitious daughter plants on the ends of the culms.

Water cress provides water gardeners with a fast growing, attractive plant that will grow when the weather is cold. For those of us in southern California, it is useful all winter as a filtering agent when the Hyacinth and Lettuce are dormant. Masses of white flowers come first in spring and with proper care can go well into summer. To top it off, it is edible. Plants will prostrate themselves on the pond edge or form floating colonies over open water. Reseeds freely.

This is a particularly useful plant in streams and waterfall wiers, or in very shallow water to wet ground. Leaves are bright green, broadly lanceolate and grow from a creeping stem. Numerous branches and roots are produced so the plant can form a low thicket or dense floating mass. Bright blue, fragrant flowers are seen whenever their is sufficient sunshine on the plants to produce them. Here in southern California, we have seen them bloom at Christmas.

As the name implies, this plant, and its cousins, resemble four-leaf clovers. Actually, they are ferns. In this case, the leaves are about 1 inch in diameter, are medium green, and have a crenate, or notched edge. As with all of the Marselias, the leaves arise from a heavily branched, creeping rootstock which can grow to great lengths. A nice addition to any bog or small water garden in a restrictive pot. A plant with erect stems 2 to 5 feet tall. The leaves are compound and up to 12 inches long with 2 inch leaflets. The foliage is green spring through summer, turning bronzy-red in the fall. The flowers are tiny, in compound umbells 1 to 1 1/2 feet tall. Fragrant when disturbed.

Leaves grow in an erect rosette from a woody rootstock. Leaves are lanceolate, approximately 6" long and 1" wide, and are pointed at the end. Flowers are small, pink, and are produced in large numbers on a stalk that grows to 4' high. Grows in mud or shallow water. ZONE 5

A stout bog plant with lanceolate leaves under water, and lanceolate to heart shaped leaves on long stems above the water. Small white or lavender flowers are borne in sprays on a 3 foot high highly branched inflorescence. The effect of inflorescence in full bloom reminds one of a spray of Baby's Breath flowers, used in floral arrangements. The foliage is a pleasant moss green. Reseeds freely.

A perenial water plant with floating, ovate leaves which grow from a thick rootstock. The leaves are green and fleshy. Flowers are buttery yellow, with a darker center, 2 inches in diameter, and are produced at the ends of runners, which also produce new plants. Very nice when mixed in with a low planting at the edge of the pond. Not tolerant of freezing. ZONE 8

Low lying aquatic herb that prefers shallow waters, mud flats or muddy shores. Great for use as a groundcover. Small succulent in the jade family. Flowers August through September. Hardy to ZONE 3

Related to the terrestrial sensitive plant, Mimosa pudica, this aquatic species floats on the water by means of swollen, air-filled sections of the stems. Small, compound leaves snap shut when touched, giving the plant its common name. They reopen within minutes. Leaves also close at night, or when the weather is cool. Yellow, puffball-like flowers emerge from the main stem on short stems at the leaf axils. Excellent as a curiosity or as a showpiece plant, or to inspire interest in gardens and plants in children.

A lovely plant with gray-green leaves, purple flowers, and a nice, light fragrance when bruised. Blooms spring through summer, and will grow in deep water in a submersed form or in the emersed form shown here. Does well in frost-free areas, and in sun or shade.

Stems are prostrate to semi-erect, branching, rooting at the leaf nodes. Leaves are dark green, stiff, slightly hairy, three-lobed, and deeply veined. Flowers are about 1" in diameter, are yellow with a darker area at the bottom of each petal. Flowers occur all year in mild climates, and create a lovely display when the plant is established. This plant will spread over concrete and among stones to create a quick, attractive, naturalized look, that is also about as tough as nails.

Tall, erect, pointed stems are whitish when young, turning to green. Rush grows to 4-7' tall. Tufts of small, white and brown flowers are held on the ends of the stems. Will grow in shallow water or on mud. Excellent as a strong vertical line against a wall or to define a corner. Spreads by rhizome. Will form dense marginal colonies if allowed to. This plants growth habit is similar to that of the other Marselias with the distinction of having pubescent, or hairy leaves. This "hariness" gives the plant a silvery appearance when viewed from a distance. It tolerates full sun and low water.

One of the few native water loving plants that we have to see in southern California that can be called showy. Its dark green ovate leaves can grow to 2 to 3 inches wide and 6 inches long on a stem of equal length. Leaves grow in a rosette from a thick rootstock. Older leaves turn marroon on their edges and stems. Small white flowers are borne on a central thickened spike about 2 inches long, which is surrounded by 6 white to reddish petal-like bracts. Mud-midget, native to Florida, is another small duckweed, but this one has narrow, elongated fronds. Mud-midget plants float just beneath the surface of the water. This is an excellent plant for shading water, using up free nutrients in the water, or for feeding certain herbivorous fish. One portion is approximately the volume of a 1 ounce measure.

Water Lettuce is one of the perennial favorites among pond keepers. Its ability to filter water and its unusual appearance make it a fitting addition to any medium sized to large pond setting. In smaller ponds or barrels it tends to overwhelm its tankmates. Its leaves are thick, fuzzy, and gray-green. The leaves form a rosette on the water surface.
