The name Nymphoides means "lily-like", and while theleaves are similar, the flowers are very different. The brilliant yellow, star shaped flowers have 5 narrow, fringed petals, each about an inch and a half long and a quarter of an inch wide. Each plant produces several flowers in a day in the peak fo the season. The leaves are leathery, round with a deep sinus, and are interestingly variegated with dark purplish blotches in a pattern that would remind one of an alligator handbag. The leaf margin is scalloped, especially in the older leaves. Variegation increases with brighter light. Naturalizes well, owing to its habit of producing runners with new plants at approximately 18 inch intervals. The flowers form in clusters at the ends of special stems. ZONE 8

Bald Cypress, Taxodium distichium, is among an ancient group of trees that once covered most of North America, but which are now reduced to the southeastern corner of that continent. A California native. It has a spreading rhizome that quickly forms colonies on the edge of bogs and streams. A relative of Water Hyacinth, this plant stays small, creeping out over the water or across mud. Glossy, bright green leaves, each with a small white spot where the leaf meets the stem. The leaves are broadly chordate, almost round, with a deep sinus. They are held on short stems which grow from a creeping rhizome. Flowers occur in clusters of 5 to 10, are white to lavender, and are rather small. A beautiful little plant which will do well in shallow bogs or in running streams.
